Beate Christine Winkler | Interweavings
January 6 – February 1, 2025
Beate Christine Winkler, a German sculptor, engages with transience, sustainability, and nature in her choice of materials and themes.
Winkler draws heavily on biology and nature in her work, which, alongside art, are her greatest passions. Her two years of biology studies before she ultimately decided to pursue art had a significant influence on her artistic output.
As a sculptor, she prefers working with sustainable materials that inherently carry the process of decay, thus making transience visible. This impermanence plays a central role in her œuvre, as she emphasizes the impact of time on her works.
Her weaving works, created in a meditative process, are understood as a tribute to nature as well as to the resilience and adaptability of ecosystems. Originally made from white paper, over time the artist developed these works into vibrant colors in bold and unique combinations. These color compositions are even more reminiscent of the diversity and wildness of flora and fauna.
Winkler (*1960 in Ulm) studied sculpture at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe under Prof. Hiromi Akiyama. She was later awarded a postgraduate scholarship by the state of Baden-Württemberg under the guidance of Prof. Harald Klingelhöller. The artist lives and works in Esslingen.

In her works The time for action is now and We need climate action now, as well as in the piece Diary of a Migratory Worker, the artist repeatedly writes sentences in ink on woven parchment paper. The interwoven paper strips gradually make the words disappear, a subtle reference to how our perception and sense of urgency regarding the climate crisis also fade over time.
Through this technique, the artist makes the creeping process of repression visible, while the urgency of the statements remains constant. Thus, the works offer not only a visual experience but also a profound reflection on the temporal impermanence of our attention to pressing ecological challenges.
With my works on the climate crisis, I hope to raise awareness among viewers and perhaps encourage them to take action. Since I live and work in the midst of nature, the already significant changes are constantly present for me. In urban areas, these changes are not yet as noticeable, and therefore the perceived need to take action seems less urgent.
