The Illusionists. Sensory Deception | Contemporary Trompe-l’œil
September 20 – November 8, 2025
Marie Lienhard is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice operates at the intersection of perception, physical experience and conceptual reflection.
At the heart of her artistic work lies an exploration of the elasticity of human perception. Lienhard examines realities at the boundaries of physical laws and fragile states of equilibrium. In doing so, she employs a wide range of media – including installation, virtual reality, performance, photography and drawing – and creates works that are both sensually experiential and intellectually challenging. Her works navigate between natural phenomena and social issues, oscillating between concrete bodily experience and the evocative power of visual design. By deliberately engaging our perception, she opens up aesthetic spaces of experience that invite us to question and transcend perceived boundaries. Motifs such as flying, floating or falling serve as recurring allegories for the human desire to overcome the laws of body and mind.
Marie Lienhard (*1978 in Montferrier, France) graduated at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart under Werner Pokorny and Mariella Mosler. Her works were exhibited in Germany at Kunstmuseum Bonn, Sprengel Museum in Hannover, Gedok Stuttgart, Wagenhallen in Stuttgart, City Gallery in Sindelfingen and ZKM in Karlsruhe to name a few; as well as in France at Goethe Institute in Marseille, Cité International des Arts in Paris, and FRAC Alsace.
