Maria Kozak is a Polish-American painter living between upstate New York and Warsaw, Poland. She makes imagined, figurative landscapes that live outside time or space, ambiguous of identity. Her artworks are about unseen forces and the absurdity of being a human, the dark comedy and the parts of the unconscious mind that we try to hide or ignore. Her œuvre draws from German Expressionism, Surrealism, psychedelia and the transavantgarde.
Kozak (*1981 in Cracow, Poland) has a Master’s degree in painting from the New York Academy of Art and is an alumni of NEW INC, the New Museum’s incubator for art + technology. She was awarded a NYFA/NYSCA Grant and a Schusterman Foundation Fellowship for her work in emerging technology.
