The Mediterranean is often imagined as a destination. Yet for millennia it has served as a meeting ground, a shared body of water linking Europe, Africa, and Asia. Ideas, goods, stories, traditions, and, above all, people have crossed its waters long before the region became synonymous with leisure and tourism. Beyond the blue horizon lies a history of connection, exchange, and cultural transformation, where diverse cultures have shaped one another through continuous interaction. While the Mediterranean has also been marked by conflict, war, and struggles for power and resources, its human history reveals an equally enduring legacy of coexistence, mutual influence, and cultural enrichment.
As the French philosopher Ćdouard Glissant puts it, cultures become richer through contact rather than isolation. Exchange, translation, and encounter are not threats to identity but the very conditions through which it evolves.
In Beyond the Blue, Timo Grimm, Joeggu Hossmann, Lydiane Lutz, and the French-Moroccan artist Marc Perez explore this spirit of connection. Their works engage with water and the Mediterranean not merely as landscapes, but as spaces of encounter that unite rather than divide. Together, the artists suggest that diversity is not simply something that can coexist; it is a source of enrichment, broadening perspectives, fostering dialogue, and creating the conditions for new beginnings.

Exhibiting Artist
Timo Grimm (*1990 in Hamburg), is a contemporary German painter who explores the potential of traditional trompe l’oeil painting techniques. At the first glance, his works resemble cracked Delft tiles from the 17th centuryābut upon closer inspection, they reveal themselves as meticulously crafted oil paintings on canvas. Real cracks, created through the deliberate breaking and reconstruction of wooden stretchers, intensify the illusion of ceramic surfaces. Grimm graduated under Prof. Werner BĆ¼ttner at the Fine Art Academy in Hamburg, and he studied at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Joeggu Hossmann (*1978 in Thun. Switzerland) merges motives from contemporary life in the digital era and travel moods into meticulously composed canvases. Hossmannās content is radically contemporary. His motifs are collected, compressed impressions of everyday life, reflected and frozen as in a digital camera, often pixelated, but executed in oil on canvas.
Lydiane Lutz (*1981 in Stuttgart, lives and works in Ulm, Germany) in her paintings combines powerful, dynamic brushstrokes with gently flowing areas of colour that express inner moods and emotional landscapes. A central motif in her work is water ā a symbol of freedom, letting go and diving into the unconscious. The artist graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Prof. Klein and Prof. WƤhner.
Marc Perez (*1955 in Tunis, lives and works in Paris, France) born in a family of painters, is a self-tought sculptor. As the French curator Colette Felous writes: His work stands in balance between the journey of an explorer of the intimate and the almost metaphysical quest of an artist, between poetry, oneirism and psychoanalysis. Perez works were exhibited at Biennale de Lyon (2022), in multiple times in Paris at the Galerie Felli.
